Asian Access - Changing the Few who Change the Many

Mission: To equip and unify visionary Christ-centered leaders to influence Spirit-led change

President – Joseph W. Handley, Jr.

We were introduced to Asian Access years ago by Pastor Adrian De Visser, a good friend from Sri Lanka. Pastor Adrian volunteers a significant amount of time for the ministry, which is a further testament to Asian Access’ Kingdom impact. Asian Access is extremely effective with their leader development training in 17 countries, and we are pleased to see them expand their efforts outside of Asia to the Middle East, North Africa, and beyond.

History

Asian Access was launched in Japan in 1967. During the first fifteen years, the focus was primarily on evangelism through short- and long-term missionaries who were teaching English conversation. From 1980-1995, there was a significant influx of career missionaries, creating opportunities to serve the church in areas such as music, worship, sports, church planting, and leadership development. In 1995, their strategy narrowed to focus on church multiplication and leader development. Asian Access now equips leaders for the church and for the marketplace.

The Problem

The need for leader development for the church in Asia—where 85% of the world's unbelievers live—is a challenge of paramount importance. The ability of the church to respond to obstacles and opportunities is directly proportional to the vision and the strength of its leadership. Because they are faced with such a vast population, identifying and targeting key "influencers" is equally important.

The Solution

Asian Access believes the first step is to equip and unify visionary Christ-centered leaders to influence Spirit-led change. Not every leader is a good fit for the program, so identifying the right kind of leader—leaders with potential, not potential leaders—is crucial. Asian Access’ model has been recognized as one of the most creative and fruitful leadership training programs in Asia by focusing on four outcomes in the life of every leader:

  • Living in a love relationship with God

  • Growing as a Christlike Leader

  • Reproducing disciple-making leaders

  • Catalyzing Christ-centered movements

Inner Change Flows Outward

Throughout the duration of the two-year training, the leaders dive deeper and send down spiritual roots. They first connect (abide) with God and with each other. They learn to trust and become transparent with one another. As a result, each member of this learning community grows in Christ-like character. From this inner-life growth flows disciplemaking and establishing God movements, such as church planting.

Through this transformational process, they become more aware of their distinct strengths individually, as well as the unique giftedness of their congregations. They are also given the skills to determine more precisely the needs of the communities and the context in which they live and minister. Upon that knowledge, they then develop skills to equip their congregation for effective service. Following that, they articulate their long-term vision and begin to develop strategies for growth and multiplication.

Transformation

God transforms. He makes us new creatures, and His Word renews our mind. Our responsibility is to nurture a love relationship with Him and cooperate with His Spirit, who works in us. He also uses biblical community to change us from the inside out.

When that happens to leaders united in a safe community, God transforms not only those leaders, but their families and places of influence.

“If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

(2 Cor 5:17)

"...be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Rom 12:2)

At Asian Access, they strive to submit to His transforming power personally and corporately. In developing leaders in the church and now in the marketplace, Asian Access contributes by creating both space in the leader's life, as well as a safe community environment that leads to a transformational process in participants and, in time, their whole world.
