Cause: Provide Clean Water in Africa
Zephaniah Mukalere – Country Director
Introduction
We were first introduced to Zepha at Water School Uganda years ago by our good friend, Kenneth Rwego, who we’ve known for many years. You might recall we posted on Kenneth's ministry, Eden Mission, last year. We feel Water School Uganda does a very good job meeting one of the most critical needs of safe drinking water. We also feel they did an excellent job serving the community during the COVID-19 crisis.

History
Water School Uganda and Water School Canada were created in 2007 as independent charities by Ugandans and Canadians respectively. Bob Dell, who would often visit Uganda, observed how the lack of clean drinking water had a devastating impact on people’s lives; not only on their health but also on their education, economy and families. With over 40 years of experience as a water engineer, he knew that he had to do more to help.

With the help of Fraser Edwards, the then Africa Director of Compassion Canada - one of the world's leading children’s charities, they sought how they could work together with Ugandans to tackle this issue head on. As a result of their passion and hard work, Water School Uganda was created with Zepha as one of the founding Directors. In addition to tackling this crisis, they have also adopted Christian Passion by confronting poverty and suffering with the Love of God.
The Problem
Globally, water is life's most basic need, and yet millions of people spend hours searching for it. People in rural areas draw their drinking water mainly from surface sources such as ponds, rivers and lakes. These sources are often watering holes contaminated by livestock, latrines, and debris from mudslides. These dangerous water sources coupled with limited awareness and education of proper sanitation/hygiene techniques, and not having access to clean water can be life-threatening. In order to be good witnesses of the Good News of the Kingdom of God, this mission works with vulnerable people in communities in the quest for holistic safety of life and transformation like our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ taught.

The Solution
After a decade in the field, Water School Uganda's solutions have been proven, reliable and effective. These solutions include clean water though solar disinfection, which is a World Health Organization-approved simple, scientific, scalable and sustainable way to utilize plastic bottles and direct sunlight to destroy bacteria and other pathogens. They also utilize rainwater collection tanks, build hand-washing stations at people's homes, provide training on hygiene for communities, as well as composting and safe toilets and energy-efficient cookstoves to those in need and equipping church leaders with practical skills to show the Love of God. These are some of the solutions Water School Uganda has implemented by tackling the ever-growing water crisis in Uganda as an entry point to improve the lives of thousands of people.
